Tell a Story Blog Hop

Welcome to the Tell A Story Blog Hop!

The grand prize is $30 gift card Amazon or Barnes & Noble. There is a chance to win something on each blog also.

I've always loved to read, and dabbled in writing here and there through the years. But it was a few years ago that I was bite full force by the writing bug.

I was asked a few months back when being interviewed for a bog to write a flash fiction using these three words - Gun - Pest - News.

I looked at the words and thought the task was impossible, but I didn't want to back down from the challenge. So I dug deep inside myself and got in touch with my inner redneck!

Buckle up... here we go!

A Day in the Country

Luann was outside in the barn looking through the drawers of her husband, Randy's, work bench for a hammer, when she heard a screeching sound from behind her causing her to jump. On instinct she grabs a gun off of the rack that hangs over the workbench. She turns slowly to find that it's  two huge rats fighting in the corner. Luann lets out the breath she was holding and remembers hearing on the news that the town is overrun with rats. She hates any kind of furry little creatures, especially if they are in her barn. She holds the gun out and aims at the first little pest and pulls the trigger. Without hesitating, she cocks the gun and aims at the one running away and pulls the trigger once again.

Dropping the gun she wipes the sweat from her forehead. She looks at the two dead bodies and sighs. She grabs a shovel, disposes of the bodies, cleans up with some bleach, and places the gun back on the rack. She finally finds the hammer she was looking for and heads back toward the house smiling and feeling pretty proud of herself. She can’t wait for Randy to come home so she can share what happened. She places the hammer down on the counter forgetting why she even needed it, grabs a beer, walks onto the deck, sits down in her favorite chair and glances out over the ranch. “There is nothing better than country living,” she whispers into the cool air before she takes a swig of the beer.

Again... have no idea where that came from.

  8. Wow talk about a woman who can take care of herself, I'm not a big fan of rats myself...at least not the wild kind but I'm not sure I could take a gun to em.

Great character though and nice story set up. Ya never know what you can do until you think something's impossible!
