Second Time’s the Charm by Melissa Keir

What if your soul mate was your best friend's ex-husband?

A middle aged divorcee with two children must find her way back to love after a devastating divorce leaves her with no self confidence in herself or even in love. Lissa's ex-husband has shredded her self esteem, so she has thrown herself into her children and job.

An emergency life threatening illness of her best friend's son puts her on the path to romance. Lissa finds her new love in an unexpected way...introduced by his ex-wife.

Who knew that first time loves could lead to second chances?

One week later with Joe out of the hospital, I tried to get my life and libido back on track. Back at the pediatrician’s office, I quickly forgot my mental lapse and chalked it up to lack of sex. Alex wasn’t the guy for me. He couldn’t be. He was just an innocent bystander of my fantasies.

The phone rang, pulling me from my thoughts. “Livingston Pediatrics, Ms. Vincent speaking. How can I help you?”

“Lissa?” That sexy voice I was trying to evict from my mind invaded my life again. “Can you help me? Hmmm, let me think… Actually, I'm calling to invite you to Joe’s welcome home party.” Tingles began to traipse down my spine.

“Thanks, Alex, but I’m already going to be there with my boys. I guess I will see you there. but we can plan that date in another time.”

Alex’s striking face and hunky shoulders floated through my mind as we ended the call and thoughts of him distracted me for the rest of the day.

The morning of Joe’s party was a chaotic nightmare at my house. My own kids got into a fight and spilled most of breakfast on the kitchen floor. Then there was the issue of my nose. Scotty and Mac were cleaning up the last of the orange juice mess when Scotty stood up abruptly and knocked me on the nose.

Sitting with a package of frozen peas on my nose as a result, I wished I could just skip Joe’s party.

Arriving nearly an hour late was fashionable I assured myself as I got out of the car. Scotty and Mac grabbed Joe’s present, and my world famous chocolate mint brownies and then followed me to the door.

“Lissa, Scotty, Mac, welcome! Thank you for bringing dessert. You didn’t have to,” Chloe assured me as she grabbed me in a tight hug. “What happened to your nose?”

I glanced at the boys who both wore guilty looks. “Just an accident.”

“Boys, the rest of the kids are playing X-Box in the basement. You can head down there. Mike, take Chloe’s treat. ” Chloe continued.

Before Mike could take a step towards me, Alex pushed him aside. “I’ll get it.”

“Hello, Alex.” My knees started to quake and my gaze lingered on his lips. Darn, no candy bars in sight. “Thanks.”

“Lissa, you're enchanting. How did you know that I love chocolate?” He took the pan of brownies and led me into the kitchen. “You look amazing. What happened to your nose?”

“Boys,” I replied as if one word could explain away every situation.

A sparkle lit Alex’s mischievous blue eyes and he leaned down to kiss my nose. “A kiss to make it better.” My breath caught in my throat.

For the rest of the party, Alex herded me around the room like I was his own personal date, making sure I had enough to eat or drink and wasn’t too hot or cold. It was nice, feeling so protected. At parties in the past, Steve usually dumped me at the door so he could hang with his friends. But Alex was gallant, like a chivalrous knight of old.

Lounging on the back porch, Alex and I enjoyed watching the various people interact. In time, Alex’s hand began to trace circles on the small of my back causing tingles to climb up my spine. Just that small touch made me ache. Placing my hand on Alex’s leg, I squeezed slightly and saw him gasp. We were like teenagers, dying to put our hands on each other.

Teasing each other with light touches throughout the party, my tension grew. I wanted nothing more than to push Alex down on the ground and run my mouth over his body but a child's party was hardly the place. We talked and found out how much we had in common. Was a relationship with Alex possible? Am I the only one thinking this?

About the Author:

Melissa Keir has always wanted to be an author when she wasn’t hoping for a career as a race car driver.  Her love of books was instilled by her mother and grandparents who were avid readers. She’d often sneak books away from them so that she could fantasize about those strong alpha males and plucky heroines.  In middle school and high school, Melissa wrote sappy love poems and shared them with her friends.  She still has those poems today! In college, her writing changed to sarcastic musings on life as well as poems with a modern twist on fairy tales and won awards for her writing. You can find many of these musings along with her latest releases on her website and blog.

As a writer, Melissa likes to keep current on topics of interest in the world of writing.  She’s a member of the Romance Writers of America and EPIC.  Melissa is always interested in improving her writing through classes and seminars.  She also believes in helping other authors and features authors and their books on her blog.

Melissa doesn’t believe in down time.  She’s always keeping busy.  Melissa is a wife and mother, an elementary school teacher, a book reviewer, an editor for a publishing company as well as an author. Her home blends two families and is a lot like the Brady Bunch, without Alice- a large grocery bill, tons of dirty dishes and a mound of laundry. She loves to write stories that feature “happy endings” and is often found plotting her next story.

Her releases include “Forever Love” in the Love, Again Anthology. It’s sequel Beach Desires. These stories tell the tale of five daughters who moved away from their small town but now facing a father with Alzheimer’s. Melissa also has a story about finding love after divorce titled Second Time’s the Charm and a twisted tale of the Three Little Pigs titled Protecting His Wolfe.  In this story, the Wolfe needs protecting by the pig.

This is what readers are saying about Melissa’s books:
Amazon 5 star review for Second Time’s the Charm- “Such a sweet and heart warming story. As I read it, and the details unfolded, I was engrossed to see if that I thought was going to happen, would really happen.” – Lacey Wolfe, Romance Author.

Barnes and Nobel 5 star review for Protecting His Wolfe- Great read. I couldn't put it down. I really liked the characters, especially Betsie and the Pigg brothers. A love story with suspense and surprise.” – Anonymous
